Beirut Explosion
On August 4, 2020, a huge explosion rocked Lebanon’s capital city of Beirut. Over 300,000 were displaced and became homeless, 190 people were killed, and more than 6,500 were wounded, More than 10,000 buildings were damaged, including hundreds of heritage/historical sites with billions of dollars in damage.
This tragedy, in conjunction with the ongoing economic crisis and financial fallout (over 60% of the population under the line of poverty and in dire need of help) and the COVID-19 pandemic, has driven the René Moawad Foundation to lead an emergency response initiative promptly. This Beirut Emergency Relief initiative aims at alleviating pain and enabling aid to the affected population on many fronts, with Livelihood assistance, humanitarian relief and rehabilitation of damaged homes and moderately damaged SMEs.
